Policy developments in the fields of talent attraction, upskilling, and retraining, urban regeneration, and territorial innovation have gained more significance, affecting the role of regional development agencies in achieving sustainable cities and regions. During the annual EURADA conference, AGORADA, held at the European Committee of the Regions on 6th June, IURC demonstrated through the example of Malaga City how international cooperation can boost urban regeneration.

The Urban Regeneration session, moderated by Ronald Hall from DG REGIO, brought together Anne Wetzel from Hauts-de-France Region, Jonas Peterson from the International Economic Development Council,Alberto Ruiz Carmona from Malaga City Council. They highlighted the significance of European grants in testing and scaling innovative urban solutions, capacity building, and the role of public participation, strategic foresight, and storytelling in shaping sustainable urban development.

Specifically, Alberto shared their experiences in urban regeneration projects as well as their collaboration with cities under the umbrella of IURC.  He emphasised the importance of rethinking strategies, learning from stakeholders, 和 strengthening the capacities of local authorities and innovative actors. He also highlighted the benefits of cooperation between cities beyond specific programs and the value of participating in international events to generate new ideas and collaborations.

Throughout the event, participants engaged in fruitful discussions and shared best practices in regional development. The importance of collaboration, inclusivity in decision-making, and the holistic approach considering social, cultural, economic, and environmental interests was emphasised.

AGORADA proved to be an insightful and fruitful event for regional development professionals and relevant stakeholders across Europe. Titled “6Ps towards Sustainable Cities and Regions,” the event focused on policy developments and the role of regional development agencies in various key areas. It served as a platform for professionals to exchange knowledge, share experiences, and collaborate on regional development topics.
