On February 22nd, IURC Latin America held its webinar #12 “From Grey to Green: Torino’s rebirth through Urban Regeneration and Social Innovation”. The event sought to provide an introduction to Torino’s history and context, in anticipation to the “Cities Forum 2023” that will take place on March 16th- 17th. Formerly known as the “Motor City of Italy” and as an important automotive industry centre, Torino is now celebrated for its design, culture, innovation, social inclusion and sustainability, showcasing a successful model of resilience and green regeneration.

The event brought together experts from Torino (Italy), who shared insights on the city’s impressive urban transformation. Fabrizio Fabriero (Head of European Funds and Innovation Department, City of Turin) briefly introduced the Cities Forum, followed by Giulietta Fassino (Director of Cultural Activities, Torino Urban Lab), who provided more details about Torino’s transformation from a polluted, grey, and industrial city, to a competitive and innovative hub, shifting its focus towards knowledge economy. The city’s recovery strategy promoted its cultural identity through innovative regeneration policies. Giovanni Ferrero (Director of Programs, Department of Urban Regeneration, City of Turin) shared final thoughts about Torino’s urban regeneration, with a special focus on the “Case del Quartiere”, which are community centres operating in different neighbourhoods. They actively contribute to social inclusion and urban welfare, as well as to the creation of bottom-up governance experiences by empowering citizens in finding collaborative solutions to common problems.

Participants from 26 cities and 10 countries joined the webinar.
